The Sturmey Archer HSA284 uses standard 1/4" bearing balls. If you wish, you can also replace the bearing balls only, and continue using the ball cage. You can also use loose bearing balls without the cage. When not using the cage, 10 balls can be used (instead of 7), thus making the bearing stronger. We have Grade 10 1/4" bearing balls in another page.
